This is my Amsterdam; tips for food hotspots in all neighborhoods!

'🎵 Give me Amsterdam, that is much nicer than Paris!' I think only the local people from Amsterdam can relate to this song. I was born and raised in Amsterdam. I love the food hotspots, but I can also spend hours wandering along the canals. In this blog, I will take you through the different neighborhoods, but I will also tell you where I like to eat 😋.

A small spoiler: Being Surinamese, I will also tell you where you can find really good Surinamese food!

The neighborhoods of Amsterdam

Amsterdam West

I grew up in Amsterdam Nieuw-West in the Slotervaart district. In Nieuw-West, I like to go to the Turkish bakery for fresh Turkish bread and sandwiches with feta and spinach! I also love to walk (if the weather is nice) with my mother through the Sloterpark to the Osdorpplein, where we get groceries and, of course, also score a Turkish pizza or a shawarma sandwich 🤭.

Other tips for Nieuw West are:

  • Club Puck (indoor gamehall)
  • Floor17 (skylounge and rooftopmovienights)
  • BARTACK (cup of coffee on a sunny terrace)

My favorite neighborhood is Oud-West. This neighborhood is pleasantly busy, but at the same time, you can also look for peace. When I lived there, I liked to walk from the Overtoom to the city, or through the Kinkerbuurt. In the Kinkerbuurt you will find the Hallen, where you have a large food hall, including a cinema. On the other side of West you will find the Westerpark. Perfect for a run, and every year in May, you will find the food festival Rollende Keukens’ here.

Oud-West has many food hotspots! Too many to even remember, but here are some of my favorite spots;

Amsterdam Oost (East)

When I think of Amsterdam Oost, I think of the Dapperbuurt. A neighborhood where different cultures come together. You can see this very well in the type of shops and restaurants - there is a bit of everything! Every year on July 1st, we commemorate and celebrate the abolition of slavery during the Keti Koti festival in the Oosterpark. There is music and more than 100 Surinamese stalls.

In East, I usually get Surinamese food 🤭, but I have a few other favorite places to eat:

Amsterdam Zuid (South)

At the moment, I live with my family in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid. Perhaps one of the most quiet areas of Amsterdam. Within walking distance of the Amsterdamse bos (park) and the Vondelpark (another park), you can always surround yourself with nature.

Food hotspots Oud-Zuid, Rivierenbuurt and Zuidas;

Unlike Oud-Zuid, De Pijp is very busy. But that's not surprising, because De Pijp is known for food! The Albert Cuyp market is perhaps the largest food hotspot you can find there. There is nothing more satisfying, than walking through the market on a beautiful spring day and buying street food from different stalls. Are you in love with Chai Latte? Then you have to stop by at Darras. Thank me later 😉. But I also like to eat fresh warm stroopwafels (famous Dutch cookie), spring rolls, kibbeling (fried fish) or a pita gyros here.

Besides the Albert Cuyp market, there are a lot of other restaurants in De Pijp, but these are my favorite:

Amsterdam Noord (North)

Where Amsterdam Noord used to be a place where nobody came, this neighborhood has now completely transformed into a hip place. Every month you can go to the Ijhallen to score nice pre-loved items. Done shopping? Drive to the Banne, and get your tropical groceries at Toko Surinam Food, where you can find literally everything!

These are my favorite spots in North;

Amsterdam Zuid-Oost (South-East)

Zuid-Oost is known for the Johan Cruyff Arena, where you can admire the football club Ajax! Every summer, festivals take place in Zuid-Oost, including the Surinamese Kwaku festival. A vibrant festival that is all about food and music. Everyone is welcome! Come say hello at our drink stand! 👋🏽

Food hotspots Amsterdam Zuid-Oost:

Amsterdam Centrum (Centre)

I've lived in the city centre for about five years. Is it busy? Of course. It is a city that never sleeps. The advantage of that, is that you can always get something to eat 😋. Rent a boat in the summer to sail through the canals, or wander around the Negen Straatjes. The Noordermarkt is also a very nice market for shopping antique items.

Food hotspots Amsterdam Centrum:

I have saved all food hotspots for you in Google Maps. The next time you're in Amsterdam, just open this map, and you'll exactly see where you can eat well! 🍽️

Amsterdam, I love my city! It is not everyone's cup of tea, but that's okay.

I hope I can live here forever ♥️.
