Sri Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean, and is known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich history. The earliest history of Sri Lanka is marked by the arrival of the Sinhalese around the 6th century BCE. In the 16th century, Sri Lanka began to attract interest from European colonial powers. The Portuguese were the first to arrive in 1505 and began establishing trading posts. The Dutch took control in the 17th century and built forts and trading posts. The British eventually conquered the island in 1796 and founded the British crown colony of Ceylon.
