Singapore's history dates back to the 2nd century, when it was a trading settlement. In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles founded a British trading post in Singapore, leading to the city's development as an important trading port. Singapore first became part of Malaysia in 1963, but seceded and became an independent republic on August 9, 1965.

Singapore is one of the richest countries in the world. Besides the port, which still plays a crucial role in world trade, the economy is strongly focused on finance, technology and manufacturing.

The population of approximately 5.7 million people is very diverse. The main ethnic groups are Chinese, Malays and Indians. The official languages are English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.

Singapore; the most expensive destination in Asia

When we took a taxi in Singapore, I asked the driver what it's like to live there. “I don't live here,” he said. He took the bus from Kuala Lumpur for four hours to get to Singapore, and then four hours back every day, because you could earn some good money in Singapore. It all made sense after our trip to Singapore. Everything in Singapore is expensive, like you're not in Asia anymore. On the other hand, everything is very well organized and it is clean!
