We wanted to get away for two days and chose Bilbao, because we had never seen the north of Spain! It was a short flight of only 1.5 hours from Amsterdam and we had wonderful weather in February! In this blog I'll share my five highlights of our trip!
1. Watch a football match at the San Mamés stadium
We arrived on a Sunday and everything was closed in Bilbao. We were lucky, because there were still tickets for a football match of the local club 'Athletic Club'. We paid fifty euros per person to attend the match.
The stadium is located in the middle of the city, surrounded by houses of the locals. Supporters gathered on the square, which created a nice atmosphere. The sun was also shining (22 degrees in February!), so that certainly was nice!
We first stopped at the fan shop and bought a scarf from the club and then went inside to get something to eat. However, the offer was quite limited! You could only buy a tortilla sandwich or a bag of chips. We also noticed that no alcohol was served.
The game was so much fun! The fans sang and clapped, the team won 7-1. A really fun activity to do in Bilbao if you ask me.

2. Try Basque cheesecake
If you like cheesecake, please go and try the Basque cheesecake! This cheesecake is so creamy, you'll want to keep eating it! I bought an 'original' and 'pistachio' flavor, but the original was definitely the tastiest. We got the cheesecake at Bascake, but you can actually find this cheesecake in every bakery.
3. Visit the Guggenheim museum
An attraction for many tourists is the Guggenheim museum. The building itself is very special and if you are not an art lover, you can also choose to just view the art around the building. So you have 'The Puppy' in front of the building and the spider 'Maman' behind the building.
Lunchtip: we had a really delicious lunch at ARVO.

4. Take a picture at the Zubizuri bridge
Once you are near the Guggenheim, you will find the futuristic 'Zubizuri' bridge just a 10 minute walk away. It's 'just' a bridge, so don't expect anything spectacular, but the shape of the bridge allows you to take a nice picture.
If you are with children; On one side of the bridge there is a really nice playground!
5. Wander around in the historic center of Casco Viejo
You can shop in the center, there are many 'pinxhos' bars where you can eat tapas and drink wine and also a lot of choices in restaurants. We had diner at Amaren and it was delicious!

Bilbao is great fun for a day. I would recommend you to visit this city if you are traveling in Spain, because one or two days in Bilbao is actually enough. I also wanted to go to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, because that's where Dragonstone is located (Game of Thrones fans know what I mean)! Unfortunately we didn't have time for this trip, so I might have another reason to go back again 😉.
